Fever In Children

Fevers are a common symptom of illness in babies and children. Monitoring fevers at home can help you determine if your child is ill and whether or not he or she needs to see a medical provider. CVS can help you easily track your child's body temperature with a diverse assortment of thermometers that you can shop online.

What Causes A Fever?

Fevers are most often caused by the immune system's response to something. When a child becomes sick, the presence of bacteria or a virus often causes the immune system to release chemicals to defend the body. By raising body temperature, the immune system can begin to fight the germs causing the illness. Kids may also develop fevers due to some medications, vaccination and chronic medical conditions.

Best Thermometer For Kids

There are two main types of thermometers: analog and digital. Most parents prefer digital thermometers because they are very easy to read and provide body temperature readings quickly. Conventional digital thermometers have a probe end that you place under your child's tongue or insert into his or her rectum. Within a short period of time, body temperature readings appear on a screen located on the other end of the thermometer.

How To Take A Baby's Temperature

When a baby or child is uncomfortable due to an illness, it may be difficult to take his or her temperature with a conventional thermometer. Alternative thermometers can simplify the process. Options include forehead thermometers that you swipe across the forehead, ear thermometers that you insert into the ear and non-contact thermometers that you place close to your child. With any of these types of thermometers, it is very important that you read the directions for use carefully and follow them closely in order to ensure that you receive accurate temperature readings.

When Is A Fever Too High For A Child?

Normal body temperature in children is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. For a low-grade fever below 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, your pediatrician may suggest that you do not administer any medication. Higher fevers may require an over-the-counter pain relief/fever reducing medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen; however, you should discuss fevers with your medical provider for specific advice. A health care professional can let you know when you should be concerned about fevers, how best to address them at home and when it is necessary to seek emergency medical care for a high fever.
