What are the Best FSA Sunscreen Brands?
FSA Sunscreen for Skin Protection
Whether you're going on a walk or basking on a beach, pick up an FSA sunscreen to keep harmful UV rays at bay. This skin care essential can be purchased through a flexible spending account.
Is Sunscreen FSA Eligible?
Sunscreen is eligible for reimbursement through an FSA. Sunscreen helps protect the skin from sun damage and is considered to have preventive health benefits.
What Types of FSA Sunscreens Are There?
There are two types of FSA-eligible sunscreens: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and help convert UV rays into energy before they damage the skin. Physical or mineral sunscreens are thicker and help block the sun's rays. Mineral sunscreens sit on top of your skin and can leave a white hue but are often more gentle on sensitive skin.
What Is the Best FSA Sunscreen?
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests choosing sunscreens with a SPF of at least 30 and broad spectrum coverage to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Water-resistant sunscreen is also a good option, especially if you plan on swimming.
There are many types of FSA-approved sunscreens available for purchase, including creams, lotions, sticks and sprays. Cream or lotions are easy to apply. You can control the amount of sunscreen you use and apply it precisely to different parts of the body. Stick sunscreens are lightweight and less messy to apply, especially on the face and around the eyes. Sprays are quick to put on, especially on impatient children, but it can be hard to tell if the product has been applied evenly to all parts of your body.
Many brands also manufacture FSA sunscreen for babies and children.
How to Use FSA Sunscreen
Sunscreen should be applied when you go outside, even if it's overcast or the middle of winter. For optimal protection, apply the sunscreen to your skin at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors, as it takes time to absorb.
The average adult should use about 1 OZ of sunscreen and fully cover the face and body. Don't forget areas such as the back of the neck, tops of the feet, hands and exposed areas of the scalp. It's important to avoid getting sunscreen in your eyes or mouth, so when you're using a spray sunscreen, spritz some onto your hands and then gently rub the product onto the face. Consider using a bálsamo labial with SPF to protect your lips.
It's a good idea to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if you're outdoors and more frequently if you're swimming or working up a sweat.
