What is a mattress protector?
A mattress protector is a removable bedding piece that encases, covers or rests on top of a mattress to protect the mattress. Some mattress protectors are stain and water resistant, while others focus more of protecting the sleeper from allergens and irritants such as bed bugs, mold, dust mites and dead skin.
Many mattress manufacturers require use of a mattress protector to keep the warranty valid.
How to wash mattress protectors
You can wash your mattress protector in the washing machine with a mild detergent on the gentle cycle. Avoid bleach and chlorine during the process and add a second rinse cycle to help fully remove detergent residue from the mattress protector.
Do I need a mattress protector?
Not everyone needs a mattress cover, but the benefits well outweigh "need" over desire.
Mattress Protectors:
1. Keep mattresses clean and often prevent stains from setting.
2. They protect those using the mattress from dust mites, pollen, pet hair and other allergens.
3. The mattress protector helps keep the mattress feeling clean and "like new" for much longer.
4. Mattress covers often help protect the warranty from the manufacturer.
How often should I wash my mattress protector?
Generally speaking, mattress protectors should be cleaned every two months with a gentle detergent. If the mattress is used less frequently - such as a guestroom bed - the protector usually will only need cleaning once every four to six months.
