Sugar Free Cough Medicine

Sugar-free cough medicine helps diabetics avoid inadvertently adding sugar to their diets while helping alleviate annoying coughs due to colds, flu and other respiratory tract infections. People with diabetes must carefully regulate their daily sugar intake and avoid medications containing sugar, but other ingredients can also be problematic.

What are the Best Sugar Free Cough Medicine Brands?

Which Cough Syrup Is Best for Diabetic Patients?

When you're fighting an illness, such as a cold, that produces coughing, your body releases hormones that increase blood-sugars. These sugars can mess with the glucose-lowering effects of the insulin some people with diabetes must take to regulate their blood sugar levels. Some cough syrups can increase blood sugar levels even further, but it's not just the sugar you must worry about.

The best sugar-free cough syrup won't contain sugar or alcohol, both of which can raise your blood sugar level. If you have diabetes, you should also avoid cough syrups combined with decongestants, including epinephrine, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine. These active ingredients can decrease the effects of your insulin and other oral diabetic medications, potentially leading to high blood sugar. Diabetic nighttime cold and flu medications make you drowsy but shouldn’t impact your blood sugar.

Is There a Cough Syrup for Diabetics?

Diabetes weakens your immune system, increasing your risk of catching a cold or the flu. Since coughs frequently accompany colds, you might require a sugar-free cough syrup for treatment. Sugar-free cough syrup helps diabetics find relief without adding to their daily sugar load. Several popular brands make sugar-free cough and cold tablets and sugar-free cough syrup for diabetics.

Who Makes Sugar-Free Cough Syrup for Adults?

CVS Health offers sugar-free Tussin DM, specially formulated for diabetic adults to help relieve cough and chest congestion. Similar to name-brand sugar-free cough and chest congestion formulas, it's recommended for adults and children ages 12 or older and doesn't contain fructose, sorbitol, alcohol or decongestants that commonly cause issues with insulin and diabetic medications. Safetussion DM y Diabetic Tussin Maximum Strength Cough & Chest Congestion DM are two more alcohol-free, sugar-free and decongestant-free formulas recommended for adults and children aged 12 or older with diabetes.

Who Makes Sugar-Free Cough Syrup for Kids?

Sugar-free cough syrups are also available for children, such as Mucinex Children’s FreeFrom Multi-Symptom Cold & Stuffy Nose for children ages 4 and up. However, this product contains phenylephrine, so consult your doctor before giving it to a diabetic child.

Hyland's Nighttime Cold 'n Cough 4 Kids is recommended for children ages 2 to 12. It's sugar-free and homeopathic, so it doesn't contain traditional medications. However, consult your child's doctor to ensure it won't cause any adverse reactions, especially if they're diabetic.
