Laxative Powder

When constipation strikes, laxative powder may help relieve the pain and discomfort that comes with it. If you or your doctor believe you may benefit from a powder laxative, CVS may have products that can help alleviate your symptoms, so you can get on with life.

What are the Best Laxatives Powder Brands?

What Is Laxative Powder?

When you’re suffering with constipation symptoms, such as pain and difficulty passing stools, a laxative powder may help.

Laxative powders work in one of two ways. Options such as Konsyl Daily Psyllium Fiber powder may bulk up your stool with insoluble fiber. Other formulas, such as MiraLAX laxative powder, help retain water in your gut with an ingredient called polyethylene glycol 3350. Both may help you to pass stools easier.

To use a laxative powder for constipation, you usually mix a dose into a beverage until the powder dissolves, then drink it. Powders may come in a bottle, so you can measure out your own dose. They may also come in individual single-dosage packets.

Who Can Use Laxative Powder?

Adults who experience infrequent constipation may find a laxative powder helps relieve symptoms. Children may also be able to use laxatives, although it might be best to choose a laxative product specifically made for children.

Some people may not be able to take laxatives safely, including those with allergies to psyllium husk or polyethylene glycol 3350 and people who have kidney disease or a condition that affects the digestive system. Follow the instructions and precautions printed on the package. If you're not sure if you can take laxative powder safely, speak with your doctor.

How Long Does Laxative Powder Take to Work?

Using a powder laxative for adults, as directed, may take 1-4 days to work. Usually, laxative powder is a temporary remedy for constipation; don't take it for longer than a week unless otherwise advised by a physician.

How Much Laxative Powder Should You Take?

The amount of laxative powder you need to use to manage your constipation symptoms depends on the product you buy. If the laxative powder comes in packets, these already have a single dose measured out for you to add to a drink, whereas laxative powder in a bottle needs to be measured out according to the label instructions. Take the correct dosage as advised by your doctor or the label instructions, as taking more may increase negative side effects.
