Compression Wraps for First Aid

Stabilize an injury or help support circulation with compression wraps. The stretchable cloth offers gentle pressure without excess constriction. Convenient included fasteners let you control the level of compression, ensuring comfort during use. These bandages provide support while you're resting the injured limb as well as during light activity.

What are the Best Compression Wraps Brands?

How to Compression Wrap an Ankle

Compression wraps typically come with instructions for wrapping various areas of the body, including the ankle, knee and wrist. To wrap the ankle, begin at the ball of the foot, and circle the foot several times before working the bandage up diagonally around the ankle. Adjust the bandage as the swelling goes down.

While ankle injuries should be assessed by a doctor, keeping a compression wrap in your kit de primeros auxilios can help you immediately stabilize the injury and may reduce further damage during the healing process. For lower-leg compression and support, consider compression socks and hosiery.

How to Compression Wrap a Knee

Compression leg wraps may help prevent swelling after a knee injury. Twining the compression wrap around the calf first helps anchor the bandage. Once anchored, the bandage can be wrapped up around the knee tightly enough to provide support but loosely enough to allow freedom of movement. The idea is to support the ligaments around the knee as well as the knee itself.

Thigh and knee braces offer support for leg injuries while protecting the area from further damage. Braces and supports for the elbow, back, waist and ankle are targeted for use on specific areas of the body, making it easy to prevent injuries and care for minor sprains and strains at home. Braces may be bulkier than a compression wrap, making wraps easier to wear under clothing.

Can Compression Bandages Cause Bruising?

Compression wraps for ankles, knees and elbows shouldn't cause bruising when used properly. Wrapping an injury may help prevent bruising by encouraging efficient circulation and reducing swelling. For scrapes and cuts, use medical gauze or bandages designed to halt bleeding and protect wounds. After a sprain or strain, your doctor may recommend using resistance training equipment, such as hand weights or ankle weights, to build up your strength and prevent future injuries.
