First Aid Dressings

Accidents can happen anytime, so it's a good idea to keep bandages and first aid dressings around in case you need them. From dressings to bandages and ointments, CVS has all the first aid supplies you'll need.

What are the Best First Aid Dressings Brands?

What Dressings Work for What Wounds?

Different first aid dressings work best for various types of wounds, so it's critical to use the correct dressing for your specific injury to avoid aggravating it. Burns, for example, require specialized dressings without adhesive, known as non-adhering dressings, to avoid pulling the skin away from the wound. Regular first aid dressings for minor injuries typically have adhesive around the edges and a sterile covering in the middle to absorb fluid and protect the wound. No matter what type of dressing you're using, make sure the packaging is sealed until you use it so that it remains sterile.

Is Tegaderm First Aid Dressing Waterproof?

Tegaderm first aid dressings are commonly used in hospitals to secure IVs and dress injuries. They're waterproof and designed to keep moisture and bacteria away from healing wounds or incisions. Having a waterproof first aid dressing on a wound may help keep swelling down, as water can increase swelling in fresh injuries. Waterproof first aid dressings should have an adhesive that seals off the affected area from air, bacteria and water, but they should also be relatively easy to peel off without pain.

How to Do First Aid Dressing

Applying a first aid dressing to a wound is an easy process, though it differs from injury to injury. For example, applying a first aid finger dressing is slightly simpler than dressing a burn wound. First, you'll need to clean the wound. Use soap and water if possible, gently pat the skin dry, then apply an antibiotic cream. After that, carefully cover the wound with a sterile first aid dressing. Wrap gasa around it, being careful to avoid cutting off the circulation, and tie or tape the gauze in place. As a general rule of thumb, change the dressing or bandage once per day until the wound is healed enough to be exposed to air.
