Help Soothe Aches With Aleve Pain Relief

Soothe your aches and pains with a long-lasting dose of Aleve pain relief. Shop CVS for over-the-counter medicines that can help you live life to the fullest.

How Does Aleve Provide Pain Relief?

Aleve pain medicine contains the active ingredient naproxen sodium, a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. NSAIDs temporarily block the production of prostaglandins. These chemicals are heavily involved in important bodily functions, including blood clotting, reproductive processes and discomfort. They signal you're in pain or inflamed by directly stimulating your pain receptors around injury sites or places in your body affected by illness.

By temporarily preventing prostaglandins from stimulating those pain receptors, Aleve provides short-term relief. This relief could mean a respite from muscle aches, minor arthritis pain, backaches, toothaches, menstrual cramps and symptoms of the common cold. Aleve can also help reduce fevers.

Aleve Pain-Relief Medication vs. Other Pain Relievers

Aleve pain medication is an over-the-counter NSAID medication that includes ibuprofen and aspirin. These inhibit the enzymes that help produce prostaglandins. Aleve is a particularly long-lasting NSAID and can provide pain relief for up to 12 hours per dose. Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in brands such as Motrin and Advil, is shorter-acting, with each dose typically lasting around 6-8 hours.

Otro pain relief medications, such as acetaminophen (commonly sold under the brand name Tylenol), last around 4-6 hours. Acetaminophen aids in pain relief by elevating your body's overall pain threshold. You feel less pain and are therefore better equipped to handle minor aches and pains, toothaches, premenstrual cramps and backaches.

Safe Use of Aleve Pain Medicine

One big difference between NSAIDs and medications such as acetaminophen is that NSAIDs are more likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects. You may experience heartburn, nausea, constipation or stomach pain when taking NSAIDs, especially with extended use. Other potential side effects of Aleve pain reliever include elevated potassium levels and increased risk of bleeding, anemia, liver damage, hypertension and heart failure.

The recommended dosage is usually one tablet, capsule or caplet every 8-12 hours, but follow dosing instructions on the packaging. Consult a doctor before taking over-the-counter pain medication, such as Aleve pain relief, if you have any underlying conditions or are experiencing gastrointestinal issues. Also, check with your doctor before taking Aleve if you've recently had surgery, expect to have surgery soon, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an allergy to naproxen.
