What Are Takis®?

Takis® are crunchy tortilla chips rolled into a shape that resembles a small taquito. The rolled tortilla chips were invented in Mexico in 1999. The flavorful snack eventually made its way into the American snack food market in 2006. Takis® rolled tortilla snacks are known for their bold, spicy flavors and flaky layers. The intensity of the company's mainstay, Fuego® (Fire), quickly gained a considerable amount of attention. Flavored with a zesty blend of hot chili peppers and lime, Fuego® Takis® offer an undeniably intense spicy/ sour snacking experience.

Are Takis Rolled Tortilla Chips Vegan?

The main ingredients in most Takis® snacks are corn masa flour, vegetable oil, seasoning, coloring agents, natural and artificial flavors and chili pepper. There are many vegan-friendly Takis® flavors, but not every flavor is vegan. If you're looking for a crunchy, spicy, uniquely satisfying vegan snack, consider trying Takis® Fuego®, Nitro® and Salsa Brava® flavors. The non-vegan Takis® snacks have natural and/or artificial flavors made with cheese, eggs, or milk. Since product ingredients vary by flavor, you'll want to be sure to check product labels. Some of the Takis® flavors made with non-vegan ingredients include Takis® Crunchy Fajitas®, Guacamole®, Lava® and Xplosion®.

Are Takis® Products Gluten Free?

Takis® are loved by many but may not be right for everyone. Although Takis® are made with masa corn flour, the manufacturer warns that Takis® are not gluten-free. The popular snacks are made in a facility that also processes foods made with wheat, milk, eggs and peanuts. That means there's a risk of cross-contamination that could be harmful to people who are gluten sensitive, intolerant or allergic.

How Spicy Are Takis Fuego Rolled Tortilla Chips?

Many people compare Takis® Fuego® tortilla chips to the "flamin' hot" variety of another popular snack food. The crunchy, hot chili pepper and lime Takis® are rated as "extreme" right on the bag. The manufacturer (Barcel) describes the intensity of Fuego® Takis® as the "flavor of fire and a bite of lava." Other flavors vary in intensity from hot to relatively mild.
