Tegaderm

Tegaderm is a brand of transparent medical bandages and wound dressings that can be used to help cover and protect wounds and catheter sites.

Tegaderm film has many uses. Tegaderm is used to help maintain a moist environment for wound healing and to help secure devices like I.V.s and catheters to the skin. Tegaderm transparent film dressings also provide a waterproof, sterile barrier that protects wounds from external contaminants such as liquids, bacteria, and viruses. Due to these qualities, tattoo artists often recommend Tegaderm for tattoos in order to protect the area while it is healing.

Tegaderm bandages are designed to be simple to use. In general, there are a few basic steps to follow. Before you begin, cleanse the area according to your doctor's instructions. Allow the wound to air dry completely once it has been cleansed. Next, select a Tegaderm that is the proper size for your wound. There are many Tegaderm sizes available; the correct size should leave about a 4 to 5 cm border around the wound so that the dressing will adhere properly. If you are unsure, your doctor should be able to recommend a suitable bandage size. Remove the paper backing from the Tegaderm to expose the adhesive. You'll notice a paper frame around the edges; do not remove this until after the Tegaderm has been applied to the wound. Place the Tegaderm over the wound site, positioned so that the wound is in the center. Press very gently to ensure that the edges adhere, and smooth out any bubbles or creases. Finally, remove the paper frame slowly and smooth down the edges of the Tegaderm as you go in order to ensure that the dressing is fully adhered to the skin. If you doctor has provided instructions that contradict this method, be sure to follow your doctor's orders. You should always follow any instructions that your doctor gives you exactly, and contact his or her office if you have any questions or concerns.

Tegaderm film is designed to be left on for extended periods of time. You should change your Tegaderm if the dressing is leaking or if there is wound fluid under the clear adhesive border; if the edges of the dressing have rolled up to the acrylic pad; if the wound has healed and the dressing is no longer needed; or if your healthcare provider feels that it is time to remove or replace your Tegaderm dressing. If for any reason you are unsure or have concerns, talk to your healthcare provider.

There are two methods commonly used to remove a Tegaderm dressing. The first is the "stretch method" and the second is the "tape method." Your doctor may also recommend a specific procedure to follow. If so, be sure to follow your doctor's directions exactly.

To use the stretch method to remove your Tegaderm dressing:

Start by grasping one edge of the Tegaderm. If you need to, you can also use a piece of tape to help you catch an edge. Then, gently lift the edge and gently stretch the dressing straight out, parallel to the skin. Place the fingers of your free hand on top of the dressing to support your skin as you do this. The stretch will release the adhesive and loosen the bandage. Once the dressing has been loosened, you can fully remove it by either: alternately stretching and relaxing the dressing, or by "walking" your fingers underneath the dressing to continue stretching it until it is fully released. In both cases, be sure to keep the fingers of your free hand on top of the dressing to support your skin.

To use the tape method to remove your Tegaderm dressing:

Start by using the fingers of one hand to stabilize the skin next to the edge of your dressing. With the other hand, grasp one edge of the dressing. You may then begin to peel the dressing back over itself, staying low and moving slowly. Go with the direction of hair growth, and avoid pulling at an angle, which may result in further trauma to the area. As the dressing is removed, continue moving your stabilizing hand as necessary to support newly exposed skin.

Tegaderm transparent film dressings are made of a thin film backing, or polyurethane membrane, with a non-latex, hypoallergenic adhesive. Tegaderm dressings are sterile.
