Back Support

Whether you work in a labor-related field or sit at a desk all day, lower back pain is a common complaint among adults. When you're dealing with lower back pain, it can be uncomfortable and even debilitating. So how do you remedy this problem without spending a fortune? Back support devices are a simple solution that can help give you some relief. Read on to learn more about these affordable devices so you can give your back the support it needs and deserves.

How Back Supports Work

Back support or lumbar support devices can offer you short-term relief of common lower back pain. They cannot cure the underlying condition that's causing your pain, but they can make getting through your daily tasks much easier. Most back support devices are affordable and easy to use, and you can find them at most drugstores. If your back pain is not considered acute, a back support device should be able to give you some relief. The device creates a mild compression on your lower back, allowing the muscles to heal and reduces pressure on your spine and ligaments.

Back Support Brace

Most back support devices will fit around your waist and include a simple Velcro closure to keep them secure. Inside the device is a steel or plastic plate that presses against your lower back. This plate provides you with support to keep your posture straight and to keep muscles stronger. Some versions feature straps that fit over your shoulders but most simply wrap around the lower body. Make sure your device fits tightly around your body without squeezing too hard. The devices can come in several sizes or they may be one-size-fits-all, so read the packaging carefully.

Back support devices are generally safe, but there are a few precautions to be aware of. Some people may develop skin lesions, high blood pressure, and even muscle wasting if they wear back support for too long. These issues are very rare, and it's not recommended that you wear a lumbar brace for more than two weeks at a time if possible. Be sure the support device is not too snug or else it can irritate your skin and possibly cut off circulation. Wear an undershirt between the support device and your skin to avoid irritation and the development of lesions. If your back pain continues or worsens after wearing the device for two weeks, consult with your doctor.
