What Are Hydrocolloid Bandages?
Hydrocolloid dressings are a unique type of bandage that provides a moist and insulating healing environment for wounds. Used for uninfected wounds, these bandages contain gel-forming agents inside a wafer of dressing, have a waterproof backing, are available in a variety of shapes and thicknesses, come with or without an adhesive border and are made especially for difficult-to-dress areas such as knees and elbows. The gel-forming substance is made of pectin, carboxy-methylcellulose, polymers and other adhesives. They also don't have to be changed as often as other bandage types, generally lasting between three and seven days.
What Are Hydrocolloid Dressings?
Hydrocolloid dressings should be used on wounds that are clean and uninfected, free of dirt and debris, dry with little to no drainage and of medium thickness. They promote faster healing because the moist environment allows body enzymes to heal. In addition, they are impermeable to bacteria and other contamination. Unlike gauze and other dressings, they do not stick to the wound, providing you with good flexibility and eliminating the pain when it comes to change the dressing.
Hydrocolloid dressings offer a number of benefits over typical bandages. Because they do not need to be changed as often, there is a minimal disruption to healing. Their ability to last for up to a week at a time leaves the wound undisturbed longer, so it can heal at its own pace. Hydrocolloid dressings often result in less pain and faster healing compared to other bandages.
These dressings significantly lower the risk of infection because they are impermeable to bacteria. They are also waterproof, allowing for normal bathing while keeping the wound site clean and worry-free.
How Do Hydrocolloid Bandages Help Acne?
Hydrocolloid bandages can also be used to minimize pimples and reduce the appearance of cystic acne. While these bandages are usually used to absorb excess fluid from blisters, the same can go to remove oils and pus from pimples, this in return helps heal your pimple faster. While there are small patches designed to fit directly over your pimple in a discreet way, cutting out desired sizes from a hydrocolloid bandage sheet works just as well! After placing the patch or bandage on the desired area, you can wear the bandages throughout the day or overnight. Over wear time, the bandages go from clear to speckled with white spots where they have absorbed and sucked out any oils or pus. Over a couple hours you will already be able to see a reduced size of your zit, just like magic! The hydrocolloid bandages also help keep you from picking at your zit which can result in irritating it more.
How To Apply Hydrocolloid Bandages
Hydrocolloid bandages are easy to apply and only adhere to intact skin surrounding the wound, never the wound itself. The moisture generated under the dressing promotes healing and prevents the breakdown of tissue. In addition, there is no "ripping off the Band-Aid" with hydrocolloid dressings--they do not traumatize the skin upon being removed. It is all a pain-free process.
Hydrocolloid bandages are a great choice if you need something more flexible, more healing-focused and cleaner than a typical bandage. They are more expensive than other dressings, but they last so long, even in water, that you will use far less of them than typical bandages.
