Iodine

Iodine is a chemical element that the body needs but cannot make. In order to get iodine, you must obtain it from your diet, although there is little iodine found in food, iodine may be added into food (which is the case with most salts). Some foods that contain iodine are cheese, cow’s milk, eggs, and yogurt. Iodine is also used in a liquid form to help clean wounds and can be purchased at CVS for your first aid kit. Whether you need iodine for scrapes and cuts or you need it in your diet, it's good to understand how it works.

What Can You Use Iodine For?

Most iodine comes from the ocean, where it's highly concentrated in seaweed. Salt is the most common form of naturally consumed iodine. Iodine plays an important role in the proper function of the thyroid gland. This gland needs iodine to make hormones. People who are deficient in iodine may suffer from goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, though this is not common in the United States. Iodine may also be used to help treat a variety of skin fungi and help to prevent infection. It's also been known to be used in water purification.

Iodine For Wounds

For years, iodine has been used as an antiseptic. It was commonly used by medics on the battlefield t o treat soldiers' wounds during wartime. Today, you can still purchase and use iodine at home to help treat minor cuts and scrapes. Before using iodine, try to clean the wound with water. Then, use gauzed soaked in iodine, and gently rub it into and around the scrape or cut. You can follow this up with an antibacterial ointment, and then wrap the wound in a clean bandage. The antiseptic properties of iodine can help keep the wound clean and help to prevent infection.

Iodine Supplements

Iodine may be used as a supplement to prevent deficiency and to help prevent goiter. It also can be used to treat certain skin diseases that are caused by fungus.  Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting iodine supplementation. You can also check with your pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure on how to properly use iodine.
