What Is Levonorgestrel?
Women who engage in sex without any birth control method or failed birth control can use levonorgestrel to avoid getting pregnant. This pill can be taken as an emergency backup only and should not be used regularly. The most common emergency contraception used in the US is levonorgestrel-based. Other emergency contraception methods include ulipristal acetate-based and the copper IUD.
How Does Levonorgestrel Work?
Levonorgestrel-based emergency contraception works by helping to prevent ovulation. When a woman ovulates, her body releases an egg that might be fertilized by sperm entering the body during sex. So, the medication can delay ovulation to help prevent any egg being available for sperm to fertilize. Levonorgestrel makes this work by mimicking the heightened levels of progesterone which usually happens days after ovulation.
It's essential to know the timing of ovulation when taking levonorgestrel. It becomes less effective when the eggs have been released already. Additionally, levonorgestrel only works to help delay or prevent ovulation, but it won't stop and has nothing to do with an existing pregnancy. It is said to be effective if taken within 72 hours after the failure of a conventional method of birth control (like condones) or within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.
