What are the Best Water Pills Brands?

What Are Water Pills?

Water pills, also known as diuretics, are pills designed to help your body eliminate excess water weight and salt in the form of urine. Some water pills are prescribed to patients with high blood pressure, but they are also used for a variety of other medical conditions. You can purchase water pills at CVS, or your doctor may prescribe them to you, depending on your condition.

What Are Water Pills Used For?

In most cases, water pills are used to treat high blood pressure. These pills help to reduce the volume of fluid in your blood vessels, which results in lower blood pressure. Some people take water pills to help with congestive heart failure since they can help to reduce edema or swelling as a result of too much fluid buildup in the body. Women may take diuretics during menstruation to help with bloating and water weight. Some forms of water pills contain different types of diuretics for a more effective formulation. These medication can also be used for liver failure and certain kidney problems like kidney stones.

Water Pill Side Effects

In general, water pills are safe to use. Some of the most common side effects include increased urination and mineral loss. You should replenish your electrolytes while taking water pills since they can affect blood potassium levels. A few other side effects may include dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps, dehydration, and some people may develop gota in severe cases. Always follow the directions as indicated on the packaging, and never take a higher dosage of water pills than what is directed.

Types of Water Pills

There are three forms of water pills on the market. Some are sold over the counter while others may be prescribed by a doctor. These forms include:

  • Thiazides: this type of water pill lowers blood pressure and removes excess fluid while it relaxes the blood vessels. It is most commonly given to patients with chronic heart failure or hypertension.

  • Loop diuretics: this form of water pill is made for people with kidney problems, high blood pressure, or pulmonary edema (swelling of the heart).

  • Potassium-sparing diuretics: these water pills will not reduce blood pressure, but they do prevent loss of potassium. These are considered to be a weaker formula than the others, and they can be used in conjunction with both thiazides and loop diuretics. This format is commonly found in drug stores and other stores.

Taking water pills can provide a wide range of health benefits, but it's always best to talk to your doctor before taking any new medication.
