What is an Astigmatism?

If you have an astigmatism, it means that your eye has an irregularly shaped cornea. Normal corneas are round; people with astigmatisms have corneas shaped like footballs. Because of the shape, your cornea struggles to come to a single focal point on your retina, resulting in blurred vision.

Contacts For Astigmatism

Toric lenses are a type of contact lens that allow people with astigmatism to wear contacts. They also help to correct the condition. Toric lenses have two powers: one for distance vision and one for astigmatism. Due to the two-power design, toric lenses must remain in place on your eye. This contrasts with regular lenses, which have only one power and can rotate on your eye during blinking without interrupting your vision.

Toric Contact Lenses

Toric contact lenses are designed with specific features to help the lenses stay in place. These include thin-thick zones, lens truncation (where the bottom of the lens is cut off a little) and ballasting (where the lens is a little thicker or heavier). Toric lenses are also weighted slightly at the bottom to prevent rotation.

Toric lenses, like all contact lenses, must be prescribed by your eye doctor, who knows what contacts will work best for your vision and your eyes. Fitting is especially critical for toric contact lenses, since they need to stay on your eye in the correct way based on their particular orientation. If your lenses don't' fit well and slip, your visual clarity declines. Because every eye with astigmatism is unique, it can take more than one pair of toric contact lenses before you find the brand and design that provides the best fit, comfort and visual clarity.
