What are the Best FSA Eligible Skin Care Brands?

Are Skin Care Products FSA Eligible?

Yes, under the terms of the CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act, many skincare products are FSA eligible. But not all of them. To qualify for purchase with FSA (flexible spending account) funds, the product must contain ingredients that target a specific skin condition. Products made for general skin health and appearance are not FSA, HSA (health spending account), or HRA (health reimbursement arrangement) eligible.

Is Acne Medication FSA Eligible?

Yes. Although some people consider blemishes and breakouts a cosmetic concern, acne is an inflammatory skin condition and can not be solved by just covering with makeup. Therefore, topical acne medications are FSA eligible. So are many of the other types of skincare products specifically formulated to help care for blemish-prone sensitive skin.

The rules are the same whether you need over-the-counter skincare products, prescription acne medication, or both. That means anyone living with acne can use their HSA dollars to purchase cleansers, body washes, medicated scrubs, moisturizers, and spot treatments. Most phototherapy (blue light) devices often used to reduce surface bacteria and reduce the frequency and severity of acne flares also qualify. For more information, contact your plan administrator.

Is Facewash FSA Eligible?

Many people can use FSA, HSA, and HRA funds for facewash, but not everyone. If you have acne, eczema, or psoriasis, the products you use to help keep your skin healthy are eligible, including your facewash. At CVS, you'll find an impressive selection of facewashes and cleansers from some of the industry's most respected brands, including Neutrogena®, PanOxyl®, and CereVe®. When your purchases qualify, the CARES Act allows you to use FSA funds for full-size and travel-size cleansers, moisturizers, and spot treatments.

Can I Use FS or HSA Dollars For Sun Protection Products?

Applying a broad spectrum sunscreen or lotion with spf every day is one of the best ways to protect your skin from the many detrimental effects of UV exposure. Most health care professionals recommend using a minimum of SPF 15 daily and SPF 30 products for prolonged exposure. Under the terms of the CARES Act, broad spectrum sunscreen products with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or greater are FSA eligible. The list of eligible sun protection products also includes SPF 15+ lip balms and medicated sunburn relief treatments. Aloe vera gels and creams used for after-sun skincare could also qualify with a "Letter of Medical Necessity" from your health care provider.
