Applying Eyeliner to Hooded Eyes

Eyeliner for hooded eyes can help your eyes stand out, making them appear larger and more awake. Learn the ins and outs of eyeliner application and how to determine which product is best for your eyes.

What are the Best Eyeliner For Hooded Eyes Brands?

How to Wear Eyeliner for Hooded Eyes

Hooded eyes show a lesser amount of the upper lid when open. Some people are born with hooded eyes, and eyes can gradually become hooded as you age and skin droops. All eyes are beautiful, regardless of shape or size, and it's fun to change up your look with makeup, whether you're going for a night out or just having coffee with friends.

Wearing eyeliner, shadow and mascara is a great way to show off your eyes, hooded or not. However, if you have hooded eyes, you may need to fine-tune your technique to avoid smudging and to make your eyes look their best.

How to Do Eyeliner for Hooded Eyes

Your first priority when looking for the best eyeliner for hooded eyes is a smudge-free product to prevent skin transfer from your upper lid. Second, find an applicator that's easy to manipulate; the more precise, the better. Follow these steps for a simple eyeliner for hooded eyes.

  • Use eyelid primer and a setting powder to prevent oily eyelids from ruining your look.

  • Add a very thin line to the upper eyelid, right above the lash, beginning about midway and ending at the outer corner.

  • Apply eyeshadow to the outer portion of the lid in an upward fashion.

Skip lining the lower lid to avoid making eyes appear closed in.

How to Create a Winged-Eyeliner Look for Hooded Eyes

If you want a more dramatic look, experiment with adding wings to the outer edge of your eyelid. By adjusting the wing's size and shape, you can be as subtle or dramatic as you like.

  • Prep the eyelid with primer and setting powder.

  • Add a thin line of eyeliner above the lash line on the upper lid from the center of the eye to the outer corner.

  • Place a dot at the edge of your eye's outer fold in the natural crease.

  • Draw a wing shape reaching a line out from the corner of your eye and another line from the dot, then fill in the wing.

In the beginning, you may want to apply makeup tape at the edge of your eye to help create the right shape. You can always clean up wavy lines or smears with concealer. The more you practice, the better your winged look becomes. Finally, remove eye makeup before bed as part of a healthy skin care routine.
