What is Homosalate?
Homosalate is a chemical that is widely used to make sunscreens and skin care products that contain SPF. This ingredient is found in a variety of items including popular sunscreen products and makeup that contains additional sun protection. It is an organic compound that belongs to a class of chemicals called salicylates, which prevent direct skin exposure to the rays of the sun by absorbing UV or ultraviolet light. Homosalate absorbs short-wave UVB rays specifically. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should talk to their health care provider about which types of suscreen are best for them to use.
What is Homosalate in Sunscreen?
The chemical compound homosalate is included in sunscreen products to help absorb UV and UVB rays. Everyone should use sunscreen daily, however, those with sensitive skin or pregnant and breastfeeding women may need to avoid sunscreens that contain homosalate. If you do use products that contain this ingredient, be sure to apply it daily and reapply it every two hours in order to get the best level of protection. It is often paired with other chemicals-based sunscreens in order to get broad-spectrum UV coverage.
