Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup has been a staple of home remedies for centuries and remains popular as an over-the-counter cold and flu medicine today. It's low in calories, high in fiber and particularly high in vitamin C. Elderberry syrup benefits include its anti-inflammatory effects and its ability to aid in proper digestion; its antioxidant properties may also help support heart health and relieve constipation.

How to Make Elderberry Syrup

One of the many simple elderberry syrup recipes calls for 1 cup of fresh elderberries, 1 teaspoon of minced ginger root, 1 cinnamon stick and 3 whole cloves. Bring the mixture to a boil in 3 cups of water and then mash and strain for the liquid. After letting the mixture cool for about half an hour, you can add 1 cup of honey as a sweetener; adding honey will also help the syrup keep longer.

Alternatively, you can purchase over-the-counter elderberry syrup for cough and cold. CVS's selection includes elderberry syrup specifically formulated for use by babies and young children, as well as products with additional vitamin C and zinc that may further support your immune system.

How Long Does Elderberry Syrup Last?

If you've purchased an over-the-counter elderberry syrup product, refer to the expiration date printed on the packaging.

If you've made your own elderberry syrup, its shelf life can vary dramatically depending on the exact ingredients you've used and how you've chosen to store it. Leaving elderberry syrup at room temperature can cause fermentation in a matter of days. It's best to store it in a refrigerator in an airtight glass jar, in which case it can remain usable for up to 3 months or more.

How to Use Elderberry Syrup

Drinking 15ml of elderberry syrup per day over three to five different servings may help quash cold symptoms. Elderberry syrup isn't recommended for people who have issues with their immune systems or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you're using an elderberry syrup remedy purchased from CVS, check the label on the back of the box for more specific usage directions.
