Gel Ice Pack

If you're dealing with an injury, gel ice packs can help reduce swelling and give you relief. These handy packs can be found at most drugstores, and they're easy to use for a variety of injuries. Thanks to their flexible design, the ice pack can be wrapped around areas of the body like the ankles or wrists. A special gel material inside freezes, while a protective outer material allows you to apply the pack directly to the affected area for instant relief.

How To Use Gel Ice Packs

After an injury, try to remember the RICE method to speed up healing. Ideally, this method will make your injury heal faster and reduce downtime. Ice your injury for about 10 to 15 minutes every hour for the first full day to two days. If you're busy, try to ice it whenever you get the chance to keep welling to a minimum. If you're injured, keep the RICE method in mind:

• R - Rest and restrict all movement to speed up recovery and avoid any weight-bearing activity for at least 24 to 48 full hours.

• I - Ice the affected area using gel ice packs. Applying ice will narrow the blood vessels and slow blood flow to the affected area so you can heal.

• C - Apply some form of compression using an elastic bandage. Make sure the compression is tight but avoid applying it too tightly.

• E - Elevate the injured body part above your heart. This can reduce pain and swelling and ensures a quicker recovery.

Reusable Gel Ice Packs

One great thing about using gel ice packs is that they're completely reusable which makes them a great choice for your home first aid kit. Some brands also have a hot and cold design, which means you can also use them like a hot compress if needed. Since they're extremely flexible, you can wrap them around the injured area for better coverage and an even application. They're also great for long-term treatment of acute injuries, and for those who experience frequent injuries if they play sports.

Make sure you leave the gel ice pack in the freezer for at least two hours before you use it so the gel inside is completely frozen. Never apply it directly to your skin. Use a towel or other barrier between the ice pack and your skin for protection. Only keep gel ice packs on the skin for around 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Take a break until your skin's temperature returns to normal, then re-apply as needed until you're fully healed.
