What is Cocamidopropyl Betaine?
Cocamidopropyl betaine is a naturally-derived substance that comes from coconut oil. This slightly yellow liquid has a sticky consistency and presents a slightly fatty odor. It is made by combining raw coconut oil with a colorless liquid called dimethylaminopropylamine to turn it into a surfactant. It can be found in a wide range of house cleaning and personal care products. The surfactants break the surface tension in water as they attach to dirt, making it easier to rinse grime and oil away. It is typically added to shampoo, soap, shaving cream, body wash, makeup removers, and toothpaste as well as some detergents and cleaning products. This ingredient creates a rich, thick lather for foaming products and softens the hair while reducing static when added to conditioners. It also helps thicken personal care products and cleaners for a nice consistency.
