What are the Best Permethrin Brands?

What is Permethrin?

Part of the pyrethroid family, permethrin is an insecticide that uses synthetic chemicals. These chemicals act like natural extracts from the chrysanthemum flower and can control insects in a variety of ways. Some products containing permethrin are used to control mosquito populations, while other forms are used to prevent pests on crops, pets, and livestock. This chemical can also be used to control pests in buildings. The ingredient was registered with the EPA in 1979 and re-registered in 2006.

What is Permethrin Used For?

Liquids, powders, dust, sprays, and aerosol solutions that contain permethrin can be used in cattle ear tags and flea collars to prevent pests. This ingredient can also be found in many spot-on treatments for dogs. Today, there are currently over 1,400 registered products that contain permethrin including products specifically made to help treat head lice and scabies on humans. Any product that contains permethrin is regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure safety. When an insect eats or touches permethrin, it affects the nervous system and eventually causes paralysis and death.

How Does Permethrin Cream Work?

Permethrin cream is applied to the skin, scalp, and hair. This cream is applied in one treatment, however, sometimes two treatments are needed for severe or ongoing cases of head lice. This cream can also be used to help kill mites. The product works by killing any insects quickly once they come into contact with the product, but it typically takes between eight and 14 hours for the product to work completely. Most of the time, permethrin cream works on contact. However, if mites are found 14 days after the first treatment or if live lice are seen after one week, a second application should be applied. After eight to 14 hours from application, the product should be rinsed thoroughly from the skin, scalp, or hair. Always be sure to follow the directions on the label and packaging carefully when using permethrin cream.
