What Are Advent Calendars?
Advent is the period just before Christmas day and is celebrated in some Christian religions. An Advent calendar counts off each day of the Advent period in anticipation of Christmas and is a fun way to make this counting of days more interactive.
While some Advent calendars have a religious theme, others simply celebrate Christmas and the period leading up to it. Many people who don't have Advent as part of their religion enjoy celebrating the festive season with a nonreligious Advent calendar depicting general holiday themes, such as Santa, wreaths, Christmas trees and presents.
How Do Advent Calendars Work?
Advent calendars typically have a small numbered door for each day of December leading up to Christmas. The idea is to open one door a day, starting with door 1 on December 1, until the final door is opened on December 24, Christmas Eve.
The numbered doors on an Advent calendar don't usually appear in any particular order, so it can be an Adventure trying to find the appropriate door. Families often enjoy searching for each day's door together and sharing the item they find behind the door.
What to Put in Advent Calendars
Commercial Advent calendars may include a tasty treat or other surprise behind each door flap. Chocolate Advent calendars, which reveal a piece of milk or dark chocolate each day during the countdown, are a popular option. Beauty Advent calendars may contain a bath bomb or other pampering product behind each door.
If you're making your own Advent calendar or have a reusable Advent calendar you'd like to fill, consider putting wrapped chocolates, individually packaged tea bags or small stocking stuffers behind each door for your family to discover throughout the month.
