What Is Masking Tape?
Masking tape, also called painter's tape, is a pressure-sensitive tape made of easy-to-tear paper with adhesive on one side. When fresh, the tape is easy to remove. It comes in a wide variety of widths for different needs and mainly is used for protecting doorknobs, light switch panels and more during the process of painting a room.
How To Remove Masking Tape
If the masking tape was recently applied, gently pull up on the tape. If the tape doesn't immediately and easily come off, stop pulling.
When the tape is stuck on or dry, wet a rag with warm water and rub it over the dried-out tape. Allow the water to soak in for several minutes, then gently begin peeling back the tape. Re moisturize as needed to keep the glue soft and loosen the paper part of the tape. If the tape persists, get your hairdryer and gently blow a stream of hot air on the tape from 4 to 6 inches away. The heat should soften and loosen the glue. Repeat the warm water on rag approach once you've loosened the tape with heat. Use an adhesive remover if water and heat is not enough.
How To Apply Masking Tape Before Painting
Masking tape should be used to edge light switches, door handles, hooks and more when you're ready to paint a room. Apply the tape as closely as possible to the surface you wish to paint, being sure to overlap the surface you wish to protect rather than the surface you'll be painting. Press the tape into place and readjust as necessary to close the gap on seams.
