Steam Inhalers for Congestion Relief

Unblock your nose and breathe more clearly with a steam inhaler. These nonmedicated inhalers help relieve congestion from colds, flu, asthma or allergies using steam instead of decongestants.

What are the Best Steam Inhaler Brands?

What Is a Steam Inhaler?

Steam inhalers are handheld devices that warm water gently to create moist air. By placing the cup-shaped end over your mouth and nose, you can replicate the effects of a hot shower or the age-old trick of placing a towel over your head while leaning over a bowl of hot water. Steam inhalers are easier to use and produce more reliable results while requiring less work on your part.

The moist air from steam inhalers helps break up mucus responsible for the congestion you may experience from a cold or allergy, relieving sinus pain and pressure. It can also help relieve asthma symptoms by soothing inflammation and irritation in your nasal passages and lungs, allowing you to breathe more easily. Steam inhalers can't replace your regular asthma inhaler, but they may support these conventional treatments, giving additional relief.

How to Use a Steam Inhaler

Most personal steam inhalers work similarly, but it's essential to read the instructions for your specific device to know where to insert the water and how to control the steam output.

Start by measuring the recommended amount of tap water, and pour it into the chamber. Once filled, turn on the steam production, and set it to a low output if it has variable steam settings. Place your mouth and nose against the cup end, and allow the steam to gently clear your airways for the recommended time frame.

If you'd like to try a higher steam setting, you can increase the output to match your tolerance, but it's best to start low until you know what to expect from your device. Some inhalers also include scent pads you may wish to use to make the experience more enjoyable and relaxing.

How to Clean a Steam Inhaler

Me gusta neti pots, sinus steam inhalers require regular cleaning to help ensure they're comfortable to use and they work correctly. After each use, let the unit cool down, rinse it with fresh water and wipe the mask dry with a clean cloth.

More intensive cleaning is required after a few uses (generally once weekly if you use your device daily). For this cleaning, you'll typically need to add a small amount of white vinegar and water to the chamber and let it sit for 10 minutes. Check your unit's instructions for more specific information.
