What Is the Difference Between Disposable Razors and Reusable Razors?
Reusable razors feature removable blade assemblies, so you can replace the blades when they become blunt while keeping the same handle. This helps make reusable razors a more environmentally friendly option, and some brands also offer several kinds of blades to fit each handle, giving you more variety to ensure a comfortable shave.
Disposable razors don't have detachable blades, so the whole tool gets discarded when the blades lose their edge. These products typically have a lower initial cost, so they may be more affordable for people who don't shave often. While you can't change the type of blade you're using with a disposable razor, many of these razors are designed to suit sensitive skin or specific areas of your body, so you can still customize your shaving experience.
How Long Do Razor Blades Last?
Regular stainless steel razor blades typically last up to seven shaves, so you can expect to replace your razors or blades at least weekly if you shave daily. However, many of the best shaving blades can last significantly longer. For example, each Gillette Fusion5 blade provides up to 18 shaves, so you can potentially use a single blade for an entire month if you only shave every 2-3 days.
However, the exact amount of time a specific razor blade lasts depends largely on the area being shaved and how coarse your hair is. Thick beard hair can cause a blade to become blunt much more quickly, while shaving larger areas, such as your legs, can also reduce the life span of your razors.
Why Do Razors Have Multiple Blades?
Razors often have up to five blades because having multiple blades improves shaving efficiency and gives a smoother result. The first blade pulls hair away from your skin, lifting it slightly while cutting it, and subsequent blades can then slice through the hair again, getting closer to the skin each time.
Razors with multiple blades also distribute the pressure from your hand more evenly across your skin, reducing the risk of cuts and irritation. This quality often makes them some of the best shaving razors for sensitive skin, and you can improve your comfort even further by choosing products with a moisturizing strip. However, you may want to stick to a razor with a single blade if you're prone to ingrown hairs, as they don't provide as close a shave as razors with multiple blades.
