What Is A Canker Sore?
Canker sores are uncomfortable and unsightly and they often cause some embarrassment. These red sores are typically found on the mouth or inside on the gum area, and proper treatment is recommended to remove them safely. If you begin to feel a slight tingling sensation around the lip area, you may be getting ready to develop a canker sore. Read on to learn about the different types of canker sore treatment so you can determine which will work best for you.
Canker Sore Cream And Ointment
In most cases, a canker sore will heal on its own in around a week to two weeks. However, if you have a very red, large, or persistent canker sore, you probably want to try and treat it as soon as possible to speed up the healing process. There are some mouth rinses available that contain a steroid, but these rinses are usually only prescribed by a doctor. And while most canker sores don't require seeing a physician, you may want to choose a topical product instead. These ointments or gels can be applied directly to the area and should be reapplied as recommended. Use them daily until your canker sore completely heals. Try to apply the ointment directly to the area as soon as you feel a tingle to keep the sore's size and severity to a minimum.
Canker Sore Relief
Fortunately, there are some things you can do at home to speed the healing process and get some pain relief. Rinse your mouth by dissolving one teaspoon of baking soda in one-half cup of warm water. Rinse and spit, repeating the process throughout the day. You can also dab a small bit of milk of magnesia to the area as needed. Try to avoid eating acidic or spicy foods that could cause further irritation.
Many people apply ice directly to the canker sore. This has been shown to reduce redness and swelling. Use an ice cube or you may use small ice chips, allowing them to dissolve directly on the sore. Never pick at or rub your sore, as this could make the irritation much worse and spread infection. When you brush your teeth, use a soft toothbrush and a specialized toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, as sun exposure has been shown to worsen canker sores. With proper treatment, you can get rid of this unsightly sore much faster.
