Naproxen, also known as Naproxen Sodium, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can help relieve joint stiffness, headaches, menstrual cramps, inflammation and more. Other NSAIDs include ibuprofen, diclofenac, and meloxicam. Naproxen is the main ingredient in pain reliever brands Aleve, Anaprox and Naprosyn.
How Does Naproxen Sodium Work?
Naproxen works by blocking certain natural substances, such as the enzyme that produces prostaglandins, which play an essential role in inflammation. Your body produces prostaglandins at the site of injured tissue, which can cause redness, heat, swelling and pain.
Naproxen is available as naproxen or naproxen sodium. The main difference is that naproxen sodium is more rapidly absorbed than regular naproxen. Your body reaches peak levels of naproxen in one to two hours, absorbing it at double the speed of naproxen.
Naproxen Sodium Side Effects
Naproxen and naproxen sodium should be taken as directed by your doctor or as listed on the medication bottle. It is usually taken two to three times a day with a full glass of water or small amount of food to help reduce gastrointestinal distress. NSAIDs have been known to cause stomach and intestinal bleeding, so it is important to take Naproxen only as necessary and for the shortest amount of time possible.
Naproxen and Naproxen Sodium are used for many different types of pain, as well as a fever reducer. Conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute gota, dysmenorrhea and others can be treated with Naproxen.
