Shop more baby & kids
Diapers are a necessary part of having a new baby, but shopping for them can be overwhelming - especially for new parents. Don't worry! CVS is here to help simplify the process for you.
How Many Diapers Do I Need?
This is an extremely common question among parents to be. And with good reason - there is no one answer to it. Some parents choose to "stockpile" diapers, preparing by buying packs of diapers in multiple sizes long before their baby arrives. If saving money on diapers is important to you, then this could be a helpful practice, since it allows you to shop deals at your leisure. Other parents choose to wait to see how different brands of diapers fit their baby. If you have sensitive skin and are worried your baby might have skin sensitivities, too, it may be wise to wait to buy the bulk of your diaper supply until after you know how your little one will react to different types.
How Long Are Babies in Newborn Diapers?
It is always a good idea to have at least some diapers in your nursery before you bring your newborn home. You don't want to have to run out to the store right after getting settled at home! Most newborns in their first few weeks of life will fit into newborn diapers. However, many babies are only in newborn size diapers for a very short time, so it is a good idea to stock up on Size 1 diapers, too. Especially if your baby is expected to be born large, you should make sure to have at least a couple of Size 1 diaper packages in your home. And definitely don't forget to stock your nursery with toallitas, too!
When to Go Up a Size in Diapers
Diapers come in multiple sizes, starting with size newborn, then progressing to Size 1, all the way up through to Size 6. Diaper size goes by weight, not age, so your baby may spend a lot of time in some sizes and very little in others, depending on their rate of growth. Aside from following the size guidelines on your baby's diaper packages, you will know it is time to go up a size when your baby's diaper no longer fits snugly and veers into the territory of too tight. Red marks around your baby's thighs are a clear sign that their diaper has gotten too small and it is time to move up a size. Leakage is often another sign of a poorly fitting diaper. Contrary to popular belief, leaks don't only occur with a diaper that is too large! You'll also notice leakage if a diaper is too small to contain your baby's messes. Try sizing up and see if that solves the issue.
What Are the Best Diapers?
There is no single best type or brand of diaper. The biggest factor in choosing baby diapers is how they will work with your lifestyle. Whether you choose to use cloth diapers or disposable diapers is a decision parents should make based on what is feasible for them. The same is true of diaper brands. There is no single best diaper brand. Factors such as affordability, sizing, and whether your baby's skin is easily irritated will all combine to help you determine what the best diapers are for your individual family. That said, some of the most popular brands include: Huggies, Luvs, and Pampers diapers. If living a completely organic lifestyle is important to you, then you may choose to use organic diapers while other parents may not. Many families will even mix different types of diapers depending on their current needs or store prices. Others will try many different diapers until they find a type or brand they prefer. Whatever kind of diaper you are most comfortable with is the type you should choose!
How Much Do Diapers Cost?
The cost of diapers varies widely. In many cases, you can make use of coupons and sales to purchase diapers at affordable prices. Keep in mind that many parenting bloggers say that buying diapers in smaller packages can actually be cheaper than buying from the big bulk stores, as long as you take advantage of coupons and sales. If you want cheap diapers, keep an eye out for sales and coupons both online and at your local stores. You can even ask friends and family members to cut out coupons for you. And remember - family, coworkers, and friends are likely to give you packages of diapers as gifts, especially if you have a baby shower, so don't discount those free diapers!
