Enema Bag
If you have a case of constipation, you might need an enema bag to help relieve the bloating and discomfort it can cause. Shop for an enema bag online at CVS, where you can find a variety of products to help you keep regular.
What's an Enema Bag Used For?
An enema bag is a soft-sided container that stores warm water, saline or another liquid, such as mineral oil, prior to its use in a colonic irrigation. You might need an enema if you're constipated and oral laxatives or stool softeners haven't worked, or if your doctor has recommended a colon flush at home.
The bag is one component of a system you can use to safely and comfortably perform an at-home enema. It usually connects with a gasket and a hose, which then connects with a rounded applicator nozzle for easy use. Because enema bags often use gravity to gently deliver water, many of them are designed to hang from an IV stand or other elevated perch and let the water naturally flow out.
What Is an Enema Bag Made From?
Enema bags today are almost exclusively made from two materials: rubber and silicone. Both are safe for contact with the body and with the fluids used in most enemas. Both products are watertight and reusable.
Fill the enema bag with water, saline or a product such as Fleet laxative mineral oil, and close the gasket at the neck of the bag. This usually seals in the liquid until it's ready for use. Most bag designs have rubber or silicone tubing designed to fit into their gasket at one end and the tip on the other.
Some silicone enema bags are disposable. These tend to be more lightly built and come as part of a kit that includes the applicator tip, tubing (if any) and enough of the enema solution for a single use. Don't wash or try to reuse a disposable enema bag; dispose of it in the trash, and replace it with another single-use enema if you need it.
How Do You Use an Enema Bag?
Most enema kits come with instructions printed on their packaging. It's important that you follow the directions to be safe and get the maximum effect of the treatment. Before you begin, clean the rectal area with gentle soap and water. You can apply a water-based personal lubricant to the area if you feel it will help. Following product instructions, insert the applicator tip, and flush as directed. Consult your doctor if you have any questions or need advice about safely using an enema bag at home.
