What is magnesium sulfate?
Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral that the body needs for proper, healthy function of internal systems such as the nervous system and the muscles. Magnesium sulfate is a form of magnesium salt.
Magnesium sulfate comes in several medicinal application forms, including injections, Epsom salts, salves and liquids and tablet form. Many forms do not require prescriptions and may be purchased as over-the-counter supplements.
What is magnesium sulfate used for?
The uses for magnesium sulfate vary, depending on the form of magnesium sulfate.
Injections are used to prevent seizures in pregnant women with conditions such as toxemia of pregnancy, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, as well as to treat hypomagnesemia (low magnesium levels in the blood). Doctors may also use the injections for other purposes not on the medication guide. Oral forms of the supplement may be prescribed by doctors as a laxative (either prescription strength or over-the-counter) or to restore magnesium levels in the blood.
Epsom salt form may be used for soaking in foot baths, bathtubs, or similar for aid in reducing stress, relieve constipation and to reduce swelling and mild to moderate contact allergy symptoms.
Magnesium sulfate side effects
As with all medications and supplements, there may be unwanted side effects with magnesium sulfate supplements. Although none of the side effects may occur, if any due, medical attention should be sought immediately.
