Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common nerve disorder of the hand and arm that affects approximately 4-10 million Americans. CTS results when the tendons within the carpal tunnel (a space at the bottom of the wrist) thicken or swell, narrowing the small space and crowding the median nerve. Not all hand pain is CTS; it is a very specific nerve issue with telltale signs. If you wake up with a feeling of "pins and needs" in your hands, or experience pain specifically in the area of your thumb, pointer and middle finger, then you might be suffering from CTS. Other symptoms include weakness in your hand and dropping things more often than usual.

Carpal Tunnel Brace

A carpal tunnel brace is one of the first steps taken to treat the symptoms of mild to moderate CTS. It is hard to control your wrists while you sleep. For this reason, most people bend their wrists during the night, and this puts pressure on the median nerve. Therefore, many people have nighttime symptoms of CTS. Wearing a wrist brace or splint keeps your wrists straight, avoiding pressure on your nerve and making a big difference in your level of pain.

You can also use carpal tunnel braces during the day, if it is appropriate for your job. Repetitive activities, such as typing on a computer keyboard or working on an assembly line, can take a toll on your CTS, especially if your form is improper. Wearing a brace can help keep your wrists in the appropriate position and keep the pressure off your median nerve.

Best Carpal Tunnel Brace

You need to ensure that your carpal tunnel brace is correctly fitted in order to maximize its chances of decreasing your CTS symptoms. You can find braces in most drug stores, where they might also be labeled wrist splint or wrist brace. You will want the brace to be snug but not too tight. If it is too tight, then you are putting additional pressure on your carpal tunnel, inadvertently worsening your symptoms.

Braces are generally helpful for people with mild to moderate CTS. They can help symptoms last for shorter periods of time and allow you to wake up with less numbing, tingling and burning feeling in your wrists and hands. It can take 3-4 weeks before seeing results, so don't discount a brace if it doesn't provide relief immediately. If you think you are suffering from CTS, you should schedule a visit with your doctor to determine your best course of action.
