A person combs their beard with their right hand while holding an electric razor in their left hand.

A 2023 U.K. survey found that more than half of men now sport a beard, mustache or both.1 As for the United States, you may have noticed more beards around your office or on the other dads attending your kid's soccer game. Whiskers are in, and many men are opting to grow out their beards.

You could just let your beard run wild, but if you want to grow a handsome, healthy-looking beard, routine maintenance is essential. And so are the right beard care tools.

Beard trimmers

Trimming your beard regularly is a core part of cuidado de la barba. Not only does it keep you looking stylish, but it can also eliminate split ends, which could cause your beard to lose its shape.2

For longer beards, you can use beard scissors for trimming and styling; look for a pair with an ergonomic handle for a comfortable grip. For the closer-cropped beard styles that are popular today, such as the "chinstrap," you'll need a cortadora de barba.

These tools can give a uniform cut at set lengths. Most come with a variety of features, including adjustable guards that allow you to trim with precision. Some high-tech trimmers offer the ability to fine-tune your beard's bushiness in increments of as little as 0.1 millimeter by clicking a digital numeric display up or down.3

Beard combs and brushes

Just as you spend a few minutes getting your hair to look right, combing and brushing your beard will help give you an A+ appearance. A quick tip: Combing out a longer beard when you're fresh out of the shower makes it easier to detangle.

Look for a beard comb with widely spaced teeth. When your beard is clean and dry, a good brushing is necessary to help create the shape you desire. Brushing also removes dead skin, loose hairs and any random debris that might have gotten snarled in your whiskers.4

For a closer-cut beard, choose a beard brush with short, soft bristles.5 If your beard is longer, experts recommend a brush with bristles made from boar’s hair.6

Beard straighteners

Beard hair isn't always like head hair - it's often curlier and wiry. If you grow your beard long, that could produce a fun rough and rugged look. But what if you want a smoother, silkier beard?

It might be time to invest in a beard straightener, a tool sometimes described as like a comb with a hot iron. As you run a straightener through your beard, the heat relaxes and unsnarls the hairs, resulting in a more flowing appearance.

You can choose from battery-operated and electric beard straighteners, and most have settings that allow you to adjust the heat level.7

Beard oils, balms and butters

The world of beard treatments is growing. If you're looking for a place to start, it's recommended to apply some form of moisturizer to your beard regularly. That can keep the hairs soft and prevent the skin beneath from getting dry and itchy.8

You have several options, including beard conditioners, beard oils and beard balms. Experiment with each and see which you prefer. Whatever you choose, apply the product sparingly to avoid a greasy appearance. With the right touch, a bit of balm or oil can keep your beard healthy-looking and stylish.
