It takes only a glance at your search screen or down the shampoo aisle to realize how many hair formulas you can choose from. So how do you decide which is the best drugstore shampoo and conditioner for your own hair type and concerns?
The decision is more consequential than you might think. Washing with the most compatible shampoo for your hair helps you create the best base for any style you're trying to create, not to mention ensures that you're using ingredients that are ultimately ideal for the health of your hair, says Parvin Klein, creative director, color, at Salon YOSHIKO at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City.
What follows is a helpful shampoo-shopping guide, filled with recommendations and advice for how to choose a good shampoo — whatever your hair type or texture.
Shampoos for every hair type
What to look for and what to avoid for cleaner, healthier-looking hair
Fine hair
Choose formulas that feature volumizing or body-building qualities, like the Pantene Pro-V Classic Clean shampoo. Stay away from oil-based formulas, which can make your hair flat and greasy.
Thick hair
For softer, more manageable hair, pick a product with nourishing and moisturizing ingredients, like Nexxus Clean & Pure Nourishing Detox shampoo. Avoid shampoos with silicones; they can lead to dryness.
Curly hair
Curly hair needs moisture, so opt for hydrating products like the SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine shampoo. Avoid shampoos with sulfates, which can make curls brittle.
Damaged hair
Glycerin, keratin and peptides are what you want. Prueba el HASK Keratin Protein Smoothing shampoo to repair and fortify your hair. Stay away from sulfates, and shower with lukewarm water.
Color-treated hair
Products with ultraviolet (UV) protection and keratin, like L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Glossing shampoo, will help prevent fading, while sulfates and parabens can diminish color and dry out hair.
Best shampoo for fine hair
Look for: Formulas labeled as volumizing or body building are a good way to go; these typically rely on ingredients such as biotin, polymers or vitamin B5, all of which may help thicken and strengthen the hair shaft, says Raven Hurtado, a stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago.
Avoid: Oil-based formulas aren’t your friends, as they can not only weigh down and leave your fine hair looking and feeling flat, but also leave a greasy texture, notes Hurtado.
Try: El Pantene Pro-V - Champú, limpieza clásica contains pro-vitamin B5 in a lightweight formula that doesn’t feel heavy — even on fine hair.
Best shampoo for thick hair
Look for: “Nourishing and moisturizing ingredients will make thick, coarse hair softer and more manageable,” says Hurtado, who cites argan oil (derived from the nuts of the Argania spinosa tree) as one her favorites. Klein is also a fan of the ingredient and adds rice water and coconut and avocado oils to the list for thick-hair shampoo, as well as shea butter.
Avoid: Shampoos with silicones can seem like a great way to help smooth thick or coarse hair at first, but with continued use, they can build up on the hair and lead to dryness and damage, Klein explains.
Try: Nexxus Clean and Pure Shampoo is a silicone-free formula that helps deep clean hair but also contains coconut oil to deliver moisture.
Best shampoo for curly hair
Look for: Curly hair tends to be drier (the spiral shape makes it harder for the scalp's natural oils to slide down the strands) and more prone to tangles, Hurtado says, so it needs more moisture. (She says coconut oil is a good option for curly hair, for that reason.) Because of that, opt for a moisturizing shampoo, or try a co-wash or cleansing conditioner. These are innately more hydrating, and therefore a good choice for curly hair.
Avoid: Klein advises steering clear of shampoos with sulfates, as these will strip curls of any natural moisture they do have and leave them feeling dry and brittle.
Try: SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo is a hydrating, sulfate-free formula that's great for anyone who prefers traditional shampoos. Alternatively, the As I Am Coconut CoWash Cleansing Cream Conditioner is another great pick.
Best shampoo for damaged hair
Look for: Says Hurtado: "A shampoo that contains proteins, such as keratin, can help strengthen the hair." Klein adds that peptides (which are long chains of amino acids) and glycerin (a hydrating humectant) can also help improve the look and feel of damaged hair. You're most likely to find these in shampoos labeled as reparative or fortifying.
Avoid: Sulfates can be drying to the hair and scalp and potentially do more damage, notes Klein. And, when you’re washing, Hurtado recommends making sure to keep the temperature of the water lukewarm when you do suds up, since hot water can strip natural oils and leave already damaged hair even more prone to breakage.
Try: HASK Keratin Protein Smoothing Shampoo fits the bill, since it’s a sulfate-free pick with two types of keratin and glycerin (a hydrating ingredient).
Best shampoo for color-treated hair
Look For: “Shampoos with UV protection help prevent color from fading,” says Hurtado, who adds that formulas with keratin can also boost shine — which is an easy way to keep your hue looking fresh and vibrant.
Avoid: According to Klein, sulfates and parabens can both strip out color and dry out the hair, not to mention also have the potential to irritate the scalp.
Try: L’Oréal Paris EverPure sulfate-free glossing shampoo amps up shine and helps resist fading.
