What are ceramides and what do ceramides do?

Ceramides are a type of lipid or fatty acid that occur naturally in the skin. In fact, they make up about 50 percent of all lipids in the outer layer of the skin. Ceramides may be vital in helping to keep skin protected from external factors (think pollution and toxins), and they can also help the skin retain water.

In skin care products, ceramides help limit moisture loss, which can keep skin hydrated. Moisturizers, including those that contain ceramides, can be used to help manage symptoms of soriasis y eczema. A lack of ceramides in the skin can contribute to dryness and inflammation.

Types of ceramides

There are many different classes of ceramides, but they're not all available in skin care products. Some common ones available in many drugstores include:

  • Ceramide 1, also called ceramide EOP
  • Ceramide 2, also called ceramide NS or NG
  • Ceramide 3, also called ceramide NP
  • Ceramide 6-II, also called ceramide AP

Discuss the best ceramide with a health care provider.

How to use ceramides

As with any product, follow the instructions on the packaging first, and speak with a health care provider before starting any new treatment. But here are some general reasons to use ceramides in a skin care routine:

  • Itching from dry skin can be bothersome. Products with ceramides, such as cleansers, creams and serums, are often used to help hydrate dry skin.
  • When dealing with seasonal dryness on otherwise normal skin, consider a lotion with a ceramide. For extraordinarily dry skin or for those who are perimenopausal or over the age of 50, consider a cream-based ceramide product instead.
  • Apply moisturizer with ceramides after getting out of the shower. Creams and moisturizers spread more easily and absorb more moisture when used on damp skin.
  • A moisturizer with ceramide can be applied daily, although pay attention to skin needs, especially as the seasons change. Talk to a health care provider about any concerns.

Ceramide side effects

There are a few known side effects of using ceramides. Check the product label for directions, use instructions and safety information.

To test for a reaction, apply a small amount of product containing ceramide to the skin. If no reaction occurs, the amount can be increased. If there is a change, immediately contact a health care provider. Ceramides are generally considered to be safe for topical use.

What can’t mix with ceramides?

Ceramides can typically work with almost any other skin care ingredient, but speak to a health care provider before mixing.

Do ceramides get rid of wrinkles?

Wrinkles are associated with aging and external stresses on the skin. Since ceramides help protect the skin's barrier, increase hydration and help the skin hold structure, they can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Is it OK to use ceramides every day?

Ceramides are generally considered to be gentle and safe for everyday use.
