Cleansing Oils and Balms for Gentle Skin Care
Wash your skin with gentle cleansing oils and balms. These soothing face cleansers help remove dirt and oil-based makeup while moisturizing your skin, so you can feel clean and comfortable.
What Is the Difference Between Cleansing Oil and Cleansing Balm?
Cleansing oils and balms are similar, as both products feature nourishing oily bases made from ingredients such as shea butter, jojoba oil and ceramides. However, balms have a much thicker consistency than oils, similar to how body butter is thicker than a lotion. As a result, cleansing balms are also often more hydrating because they contain a higher concentration of moisturizing ingredients.
If you're unsure which product to use, especially if you've never tried an oil-based cleanser, it might be best to stick with a lighter product. However, dry skin can benefit greatly from the intensive moisturizing effect of balms. They may also help soothe your skin if you have psoriasis or eczema, improving comfort.
How Do Cleansing Balms Work?
It may seem counterintuitive to wash your face with an oil-based product, considering excess oil is something you usually want to remove from your skin. However, cleansing oils and balms are among the most effective products for removing heavier oil-based or waterproof makeup because they dissolve the water-resistant base, making them easier to remove from your skin. While soap can achieve this, your skin is more likely to feel dry afterward, and its protective barrier may be impaired
To use a cleansing oil, wet your face first unless the product is meant for dry skin. Then, apply a little of the cleanser, massaging it into your skin in a gentle circular motion. The best cleansing oils and balms make quick work of most forms of makeup, and you should see your foundation dissolve into the cleanser, changing its hue a little. You can now rinse the product with warm water and dry your face, but it's also okay to use a regular cleanser afterward if you have oily skin and want a more matte finish.
Do Cleansing Oils Expire?
Oils are fairly shelf-stable, especially when they contain antioxidants, such as vitamin E, which is common in many cleansers. Even natural cleansing balms and oils, such as Burt's Bees, tend to last months after opening, so they probably won't expire before you finish the bottle. However, discard the product if you notice any changes in smell or texture, as this may indicate bacterial contamination.
