When you get treated for a medical condition, prescription medicine is just one of the many tools a medical professional can use to address your health needs. But sometimes, it can be difficult to understand what can or can't be prescribed at different medical facilities.

At MinuteClinic, our health care providers have the ability to prescribe a wide range of medicines, including:

Which MinuteClinic providers can write prescriptions?

MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and physician assistants are all licensed to write prescriptions. Both state and federal laws determine who can prescribe medicine to patients, and all our health care providers are licensed and certified in compliance with the law. That means they can diagnose, treat and prescribe medications when it's medically appropriate.

Are there any restrictions on the type of prescriptions available at MinuteClinic?

Yes, there are a few restrictions on the medications we can prescribe at MinuteClinic. To start, we don't write prescriptions for:

Certain episodic condition medications (such as migraine medication)
Long-term pain medication
Narcotics and controlled substance

There are a few exceptions to these rules. For example, you may be able to get a prescription for certain cold medicines that cannot be sold over the counter.

Restrictions also apply to medication refills. Some restrictions include:

The age of the prescription
One-time medication renewals if it’s been 45 or more days since you last used the medicine
If it’s been more than 15 months since you last saw the provider who originally made the prescription

If you're wondering who can write a prescription for restricted medications, we recommend meeting with your primary care physician (PCP). They can work with you to create a treatment plan. When appropriate for your current health status, they can also renew an older prescription.

Can I get a prescription from a MinuteClinic Virtual Care appointment?

There are a few medications we can't prescribe virtually. These include narcotics, pain medication, sample medicines and controlled substances.

Do I have to fill my MinuteClinic prescription at a CVS Pharmacy?

You can fill your online prescription at CVS or the pharmacy of your choice. If you're getting a prescription during a Virtual Care appointment, we can send it to any pharmacy you like. That way, you can get your prescription virtually and pick it up in person.
