Need to know more about asthma monitoring? Tenemos lo que necesita.
If a person has asthma, it can be hard to breathe because their airways swell and become more narrow. Airways may also create extra mucus. As a result, breathing can cause coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
Because everyone's case is different, a health care provider will develop a personalized asthma action plan. This is a roadmap to help manage symptoms, monitor day-to-day issues and help prevent asthma attacks.

Preguntas frecuentes
After someone has worked with a health care provider to create an asthma action plan, they may need to track their medication, symptoms, triggers and other information. Using an app, spreadsheet or notebook helps both the patient and provider. They can also identify details to share with school staff for children.
People can monitor four things:*
- Daily activities: Note if asthma symptoms make it difficult to perform everyday tasks like walking, climbing stairs or doing chores.
- Daytime symptoms: Note any asthma symptoms during the day, such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath.
- Nighttime symptoms: Record if asthma symptoms wake someone up at night, including coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.
- Quick-relief inhaler use: Track how often a quick-relief inhaler is used for immediate symptom relief.
A peak flow meter is a device that measures how fast air leaves the lungs. To do this, a person takes a deep breath in and then blows out as hard as possible. Peak flow measurement can provide valuable information for managing asthma as part of an asthma action plan.
Asthma is treated with long-term medication that helps prevent swelling and by short-term medication that helps quickly relieve acute symptoms, like those caused by an asthma attack.* Allergy medication may also help with asthma symptoms.
An asthma action plan created with a health care provider helps track medications, peak flow, symptoms and more. This information helps both provider and patient monitor how well treatment is working.
Asthma medication varies but usually involves a combination of preventative long-term medication, quick-relief inhalers and allergy medication.
A MinuteClinic® provider can review asthma medication instructions and watch someone use an inhaler. Based on this, they can recommend changes or adjustments.
A MinuteClinic provider can help develop and provide support for an asthma action plan. Some MinuteClinic locations can also help diagnose asthma. They can help explain treatment methods and how they apply to different symptoms.
