STI and STD symptoms, causes and treatment
An STI (sexually transmitted infection) or STD (sexually transmitted disease) is an infection that can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal or oral sex.
Some commonly tested STIs and STDs include:
Many STIs are treatable, and some can be cured with medication. Others may not have a cure but can often be managed with ongoing care. Getting tested is the only way to know for sure if you have an STI, even if you feel healthy.
Symptoms can vary depending on the type of infection - and some STIs may not cause symptoms at all. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Dolor o ardor al orinar
- Unusual discharge from the genitals
- Sores, bumps or rashes on or around the genitals or mouth
- Itching, irritation or discomfort
- Pelvic pain or pain during sex
Because many STIs can be present without symptoms, routine screening is an important part of protecting your sexual health.
Who can be tested?
STI and STD testing at MinuteClinic® is available for patients ages 18 and older.
What happens during the visit?
During your visit, a MinuteClinic provider will review your symptoms, health history and screening needs.
Testing is simple and may include:
- A blood test
- A urine sample
- A swab, depending on the test
Results are typically available in 3 to 5 days and are reviewed with you by a provider. If your test is positive, treatment options or next steps may be recommended based on your results, when appropriate.
You can help reduce your risk of getting or spreading an STI by:
- Using condoms correctly and consistently
- Limitar la cantidad de parejas sexuales
- Getting tested regularly, especially if you have new or multiple partners
- Talking openly with partners about sexual health
- Seeking care promptly if you have symptoms or concerns
Routine testing and early treatment can help protect both your health and the health of your partners.
